The Pilates Method is a body conditioning system created over eighty years ago by Joseph H. Pilates. Initially popular with dancers and other performers, the Pilates method has become very popular in the fitness world. Joseph Pilates called his system The Art of Contrology, which refers to the way the method encourages the mind to "control" the body.

The exercise is performed on the floor or on specialized equipment. Pilates coordinates the mind, body and breath to teach the body self-awareness and strengthen muscles without straining them in a complete and balanced way. It focuses on lengthening the body while strengthening the body's core. The movement challenges the individuals balance, strength, stability and flexibility.
